Phase 01 · Identification

Understand

We listen to understand the problem, align on it, and hand back a written statement of it with a pathway to the solutions worth exploring.

Objectives

What this phase is for

  • Listen properly, before anyone proposes anything
  • Align on the problem and present it back in language you recognise
  • Provide high level insights with a clear pathway to solutions
Phase 01 of four. This is where every engagement starts, and for some clients it is where the engagement usefully ends.

Method

How we work through it

We use what the problem needs. Nothing here is run for the sake of having run it.

Internal environment

Process, structure, capability, data and the way decisions actually get made.

External environment

Market, competitors, regulation and the forces acting on the business from outside. PESTEL where it earns its place.

Data analysis

Whatever the business already measures, plus what it should be measuring and is not.

Benchmarking

How the business compares to its sector, and to businesses we have run ourselves.

Portfolio & position

Where each product, channel or business unit sits, and which ones are quietly funding the others.

Outputs

What you get

  • A written problem statement, agreed with you before it is finalised
  • High level insights, evidenced rather than asserted
  • A pathway to the solutions worth designing
  • A consultation and a light touch report, or a full analysis if the problem warrants it

Who is involved

Whoever owns the problem, plus the two or three people who see it every day. Usually a fortnight to a month of elapsed time.

The decision point

You can stop here

At the end of Understand you have a defensible statement of the problem, in writing. If that is all you needed, the engagement can end there and most of the value is already delivered.

Phase 02

Design

Options, not an option. Costed at three budget levels and sequenced short, mid and long term, so the choice you make is a real choice.

Phase 03

Execute

The design leaves the page. You pick the level of help, from a handover guide you run yourself through to us running the programme.

Phase 04

Review

Did it do what it was designed to do? We measure the return, capture the learning, and say plainly what we would do differently.

Tell us where you are. If you are not sure which phase you need, that is a normal place to start and the conversation will settle it.
